Blogging: Why and How?

Many business owners know that blogging is important for the performance of their website, but don’t know where to begin. The Tembo Team wanted to outline the why’s and how’s of blog writing to offer some assistance.

Why?

1. For Search Engine Optimization

Adding fresh content to your website causes you to be relevant on search engines. By using keywords throughout your articles that are current and optimizing on-page content for SEO, search engines will place you higher on their results pages. Thus, increasing the chances you will gather leads by merely answering a question that is searched for on the internet.

As Hubspot mentions, ‘Blogging helps boost SEO quality by positioning your website as a relevant answer to your customers’ questions.

2. To Gain Credibility

If approached correctly, blogging will increase your website’s credibility. Here are writing best practices:

  • answer a question.
  • stay consistent – post articles on a schedule.
  • provide value to viewers in the form of factual information.
  • link to reliable and well-known resources.

3. To Stay Informed and Gain Knowledge

Continue to read about your field and research relevant topics on google trends in order to stay informed and gain insight on up and coming business practices. By committing to blogging on a timeframe, say every two weeks, you are bound to be constantly learning and growing while providing value to your readers.

how?

1. Find a relevant topic, do your research: Before you begin writing blogs, commit to posting on a schedule (once a month, biweekly, etc.) and create a list of blog topics you want to cover. This will help immensely in the long run and will hold you more accountable for delivering results.

2. Once you choose a topic, gather credible resources and create an outline of the talking points you want to cover in your article. By creating an overview, you can ensure that your outline is organized. Ideally, have at least 1 resource hyperlinked for each talking point. The ‘sweet spot’ for a blog is around 300 words, so keep this in mind when creating your outline.

3. Use Google Trends to identify trending keywords that are applicable to your topic, and use them throughout your article to optimize for SEO. For a 300 word article, use your exact key phrase 2-4 times. You also want this key phrase to be in your slug, Meta Title, and within the first sentence of your blog. Do not hide the key phrases on your page by trying to blend them into the background. Google will recognize this and penalize you for it.

4. Once you complete the copy, add some life to your blog with pictures sprinkled throughout. People are more likely to enjoy a blog if they are visually stimulated.

5. Be sure to hyperlink your external resources (outbound linking) and other parts of your own website (internal linking) to help with SEO!
